IMO, ILO, FAO issue joint publication providing fishing guidance

by BUNKERIST

The International Maritime Organization (IMO), ILO and FAO have published a publication guiding policy makers and decision-makers and other stakeholders in the fishing, maritime and labor sectors to promote the approval and implementation of fishing gear.

In particular, the report contains an overview of the four main international unifying fishing agreements promoting the safety of fishing vessels, the safety of fishermen, training of fishers and safe fishing operations.

In addition, the 1995 FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries provides information on voluntary safety-related tools in the fishing industry, such as various safety codes, safety recommendations, and technical and practice guidelines.

Given that fishing is one of the most dangerous professions in the world, the industry needs to change to become more sustainable.

This publication is to promote inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment, and decent work for all. It also aims to protect and sustainably use oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.
